In 2019 Los Angeles—or at least Ridley Scott's vision of it—replicants walked among humans, indistinguishable except through an elaborate empathy test. The Voight-Kampff machine measured pupil dilation and emotional response to increasingly disturbing questions. It wasn't testing intelligence. It was testing feeling.
Forty years after Blade Runner's theatrical release, we find ourselves asking remarkably similar questions. Not about synthetic humans, but about large language models, generative AI, and systems that can compose poetry, debug code, and engage in conversations that feel genuinely thoughtful.
The Turing Test Is Dead
Alan Turing proposed his famous test in 1950 [1]: if a machine can fool a human into thinking it's human, we should consider it intelligent. Modern AI has effectively passed this bar. GPT-4 can write better cover letters than most job applicants. Claude can explain quantum mechanics with patience and clarity. Midjourney creates art that hangs in galleries.
But like the Voight-Kampff test, passing doesn't tell us what we actually want to know. A replicant could memorize emotional responses. An LLM can simulate empathy through pattern matching. Neither answers the deeper question: is anyone home?
The Wrong Questions

Empathy Isn't the Test
Roy Batty, Blade Runner's antagonist, delivers one of cinema's most poignant death speeches: "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe." In that moment, we recognize something deeply human in a manufactured being. Not because he passed a test, but because he demonstrated what mattered—creativity, appreciation, the weight of mortality.
Modern AI won't have "tears in rain" moments. But it doesn't need to. What it needs is to be useful, truthful, and safe. The companies building AI shouldn't be asking "is it conscious?" They should be asking "is it good?"
Building Better Replicants
The lesson from Blade Runner isn't about preventing artificial consciousness—it's about the ethics of creation. The Tyrell Corporation built beings capable of suffering, gave them four-year lifespans, and used them as slave labor. The technology wasn't the problem. The values were.
As we build increasingly capable AI systems, we face similar choices. Not about whether to create intelligence, but about what kind of relationship we want with our creations. Do we build tools that extend human capability, or do we build systems that replace human judgment?
